In order for your document to be validated for use in a foreign country, you probably need to obtain an Apostille. In some cases, however, an Apostille is not enough – it all depends on whether or not the destination country is part of The Hague Convention. The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents was signed on October 5th, 1961, and was born out of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

Countries which belong to the Hague Convention, such as the United States, require an Apostille certification for any document issued from another member country. If a country is not part of the Hague Convention, further processing may be required.

What is an Apostille?

Before your document is valid for use abroad, you may need to obtain an Apostille. At Apostille Documents, we offer Apostille services throughout California and are here to help you through the process. But chances are, you hadn’t heard about an Apostille before and are a bit confused.

Apostille means “certification” in French. In 1961, country members of The Hague Convention simplified the process through which official documents are accepted. For a document, such as a birth certificate, death certificate, marriage certificate, or other legal document to be accepted in a member country, it will need an Apostille. An Apostille serves as proof that the document and any associated certifications, such as notarization, are in fact valid. Once a document is certified with an Apostille, it is accepted for legal use in the destination country.
